I'm amazed at what composers have created for the silver screen in the past 100 years. Mimi and I just recently scored a short film (about 30min) in Logic Pro. Wow! It feels like technology is a blessing and a curse. Being able to hear the score instantly is amazing. You make edits super quick, obvious issues stand out within seconds, and your options are virtually unlimited.

In some ways, having no synthesizers to work with could promote inspiration. I've always felt that limiting my tool set for a given session helps create inspiration. Why? Because I'm not over whelmed with hundreds of plugins and sonic choices!

Scoring with a pen and pad meant that you stuck to the orchestra pallet. That scoring pallet has evolved into electronic sound design with acoustical elements in the film industry, which is creating crazy new sound frontiers. (I've got a 10,000+ piece orchestra in my computer! YIKES!)

All this digital action is a good thing. Look at BT's compositions ... absolutely amazing. This Binary Universe is a stunning work of art. Mimi and I saw him talk about his writing process in Miami last March at the Remix Hotel. He talked about literally writing an 80 page thesis for each composition. Not a single note is written until the thesis is complete! His mixture of acoustic and electronic sounds is inspiring, and his movie scores blend acoustic instruments and electronic instruments beautifully.
